Proverbs 6 – Lessons for Daily Life

Of course today is the 6th day of the month, that should lead us to the 6th chapter of Proverbs.

Our foundational verse today is verse 20 which states, “My son, obey your father’s commands, and don’t neglect your mother’s instruction.”

What commands or instructions are they speaking of?

Of course they are speaking of the following:

  • Putting up security for a friend’s debt (v.1)
  • Guaranteeing a stranger’s debt (v.1)
  • Lazy people (v.6, 9,10, 11)
  • Wisdom of ants (v.6, 7, 8)
  • Wicked people (v.12, 13, 14, 15)
  • The six things the LORD hates no, seven things he detests (v.16-19)
  • The immoral person (v.24)
  • Committing adultery (v.32, 33)

Theme: Lessons for Daily Life

Lesson #1: Putting Lessons into Actions

  • If you have put up security for a friend’s debt or agreed to guarantee the debt of a stranger–swallow your pride; go and beg to have your name erased, don’t put it off; do it now, don’t rest until you do, save yourself like a gazelle escaping from a hunter, like a bird fleeing from a net (v.2-5)
  • Take a lesson from the ants, you lazybones (v.6)
  • Learn from their(the ants) ways and become wise! (v.6)
  • Understand what worthless and wicked people are like? (v.12)
  • Know that there are six things the LORD hates–no, seven things he detests: (v.16)
    • haughty eyes (having or showing arrogant superiority to and disdain of those one views as unworthy) (v.17)
    • a lying tongue  (v.17)
    • hands that kill the innocent  (v.17)
    • a heart that plots evil (v.18)
    • feet that race to do wrong (v.18)
    • a false witness who pours out lies (v.19)
    • a person who sows discord in a family (v.19)
  • Obey your father’s commands, and don’t neglect your mother’s instruction (v.20)
  • Keep their words always in your heart (v.21)
  • Tie them around your neck (v.21)
  • Don’t lust for her(the immoral woman) beauty (v.25)
  • Don’t let her(the immoral woman) coy glances seduce you (v.25)
  • Don’t sleep with another man’s wife (v.29)
  • Understand that he who embraces her(another man’s wife) will not go unpunished (v.29)

Lesson #2: The Positive Outcome of Putting the above into action

  • When you walk, their(your father and mother instructions) counsel will lead you (v.22)
  • When you sleep, they will protect you (v.22)
  • When you wake up, they will advise you (v.22)
  • Their command is a lamp and their instruction a light; their corrective discipline is the way to life (v.23)
  • It will keep you from the immoral woman, from the smooth tongue of a promiscuous woman (v.24)

Lesson #3: The Negative of Not following the above Lessons

  • Poverty will pounce on you like a bandit; scarcity will attack you like an armed robber (v.11)
  • You will become wicked and constant liar (v.12)
  • You will have perverted hearts that plot evil, and constantly stir up trouble (v.14)
  • You will be destroyed suddenly and  broken in an instant beyond all hope of healing (v.15)
  • A prostitute will bring you to poverty (v.26)
  • Sleeping with another man’s wife will cost you your life (v.26)
  • You will be an utter fool for committing adultery, you will destroy yourself (v.32)
  • You will be wounded and disgraced (v.33)
  • Your shame will never be erased (v.33)
  • The woman’s jealous husband will be furious, and he will show you no mercy when he takes revenge on you (v.34)

I pray that you do what I am doing in regards to this life lesson, what is that you may ask?

I am praying and putting into action everything that I have learn so that I can succeed rather than:

  • being trapped by foolishness
  • placing myself at my friend’s mercy
  • allowing poverty to pounce on me like a bandit
  • putting up with scarcity which attacks like an armed robber
  • putting myself at peril by being like the wicked who will be suddenly destroyed
  • falling into the group of things that the LORD hates, no he detests
  • running from the immoral woman
  • putting my hands over my ears to protect them from the smooth tongue of the promiscuous woman
  • by not committing adultery

Let’s pray for the ability to keep our father’s commands and to not neglect our mother’s instructions.

If we can accomplish this then we can expect a right standing with the LORD and true success!
